This tour combines two of Ketchikan’s best activities: a boat trip to experience “a day in the life” of a local Alaskan and a scrumptious crab feast! The day will start early (around 8:00 am) as you get picked up from the cruise dock and drive through town, passing some famous attractions along the way. During the 30-minute scenic drive to the George Inlet Lodge, you will enjoy sights of the Tongass National Forest. Once at the lodge, you will board a boat that has an outdoor viewing platform. During the boat ride, you will see how the crab pots are collected, experience spectacular scenery, share stories with the crew, and see local wildlife. You will then return to the Lodge and feast on fresh Dungeness crab, baby red potatoes, oriental salad, and yummy cheesecake with blueberry topping. Your hosts will lead you through a series of local tall tales then demonstrate the easiest way to crack your crabs. A competition with your fellow cruisers will ensue! Once everyone has had their fill of crab, we will take the bus back to the downtown Ketchikan area (around 12:30 pm) where we can spend time shopping or can head back to the ship.
The price for this tour is $209 per person.
Linda Johnson’s personal take on this tour: I took this tour a few years ogo and LOVED it. The staff on the boat and at the Lodge were very friendly and helpful…they even cracked and gathered the crab meat out of Jan’s crabs since her hand was in a cast. During the boat portion of the trip, we saw some eagles and got to help gather the crab pots. The crab feast was delicious; they kept serving until we were full. You will have free time at the end of the tour to walk around Ketchikan and do some shopping and then it is about a 10-minute walk back to the ship.
Please note that you need to be able to walk down 3-4 flights of stairs when you arrive at the Lodge and then back up those stairs when you leave, as there is no elevator.
